This was my grandmother’s garden seat. There were two, and they were always on her patio. In white.
I was the only one who wanted them, and immediately painted them purple and set them in the corner of the garden for my daughters. I imagined tea parties, but they really aren’t all that comfortable, even for a child. Last year I repainted them bright yellow, except I didn’t use primer. It wasn’t good. At all. This year I moved them to a new spot, invested in primer and painted them sage green, to match everything else in my life. Much better. The coffee agrees, because it can hide there and enjoy the quiet of the yard, all by itself. I hope Grandma Jessie approves.

I’m not really sneaking it in, even though it’s 2:30 pm. I am just making up for the coffee I missed earlier in the week when I pretended to be cutting back (I intended to, it just wasn’t a good idea…at all). Steve joined me, so I wouldn’t have to feel guilty.

Let me be clear, Laverne and I are not friends. She is the neighborhood cat who began visiting us last summer. She started by simply startling me (and giving me the heebie jeebies every time). Then she tried to make things better by bringing us freshly killed mice. I think she brought us about 8 in one week. Sometimes still moving. Now she just hangs out here, and shows up every time I am in the yard. I have no idea why she bothers me so much. She’s about the same size as our old cat, Mocha (who I kind of loved). She is a fine, designery and somewhat aesthetically pleasing color of black…but she just annoys the heck out of me. After last week’s rain I went out to check the garden, and there she was…in my coffee picture! At least she had the good sense to pose.

I (foolishly) thought I could cut my coffee down to two cups a day. This was day two. My early morning strategy was to use the French Press, which only made two cups (one would be shared with Steve, because I am the sharing kind of wife), rather than the drip, which offered me a never ending cup of coffee. I knew I was in trouble at 7:45 am.

Four dollars and change. A fabulous US Map (trust me, it’s the best), a great world map, a canteen that scares me a little, a $2.00 globe (it will go with the other four in the studio) and a Jack Russel Terrier Society coffee mug. Sometimes I wonder how I am so, so lucky.

Nothing says Sunday morning like the drip of the Chemex. I could stay here all day. Oh wait, I did.
Bonus photo, in case you can’t decipher the one above:

I brought the cactus in from the rain, and to warm up a bit. I wonder if they appreciate the coffee?

This weekend we dug up part of our lawn to make way for a raised bed vegetable garden. And what better way to relax after a gardening workout than with a cup of leftover tepid coffee? You say beer would have been a better choice? Perhaps, but then I wouldn’t have gotten the photo. Heh.

I’m pretty sure this isn’t a new view. But it’s the one that shows up every morning in my chair. Especially on Sundays, when three newspapers are here to greet me.
