“Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee, and the Italians left their mark when they occupied the country for a brief period of time in the 1930s. You can see that the Ethiopian macchiato in the foreground, with the layer of milk on the bottom, has yet to be mixed; the Ethiopian tea behind it has so much sugar that there’s a distinct layer of it in the bottom of the glass. I was there for a brief period of time in 2009 working in a rural part of the country, and the time spent in the early morning hours with my colleagues and a macchiato before we headed off into the fields to work were some of my favorite moments. I don’t know if I’ll ever get to return, but I would love to be able to sip that coffee again, sitting at the low, dusty table with my friends and the locals, waiting for the world to wake up.”
And that, my friends, is a cup of coffee with a story.
